Australian Apprenticeships Sector Celebrates Excellence and Resilience
Continuing its annual tradition, MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees played host to a remarkable gathering of Australian Apprenticeship leaders during National Apprenticeship Week.
The flagship event held in Brisbane on 10 February 2026 brought together representatives from government, industry, and education to celebrate the value of apprenticeship pathways and recognise the collective contribution of the sector to Australia’s trade workforce.
Delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government, MIGAS’s Australian Apprenticeships Stakeholder Luncheon highlighted the importance of collaboration in strengthening skills development and supporting the next generation of tradespeople.
A highlight of the event was the keynote address by psychophysiologist, former Royal Navy Aircrew Officer and author, Dr Paul Taylor. Presenting on The Hardiness Effect, Dr Taylor shared evidence-based insights into resilience, adaptability and high-performance behaviours.
His presentation explored how organisations and individuals can respond effectively to evolving economic, technological and social challenges, providing practical strategies to support sustainable workforce development and future-proof the Australian Apprenticeships system.
Proceedings were led by Master of Ceremonies Amelia Oberhardt and included the presentation of two significant awards recognising excellence in the sector.
MIGAS Director Rod Margetts awarded the MIGAS Apprentice of the Year to Craig Townsend, a boilermaker apprentice hosted by Wood Australia, in recognition of his outstanding on-the-job performance and professional achievement.
The Australian Apprenticeships Leadership Medal was then conferred on Komatsu Australia by MIGAS Chief Executive David Hoey and accepted by Kate Pemberton. In her acceptance remarks, Ms Pemberton highlighted the organisation’s commitment to developing skilled workers through strong investment in apprenticeship programs.
Adding to the day's significance, the luncheon also provided the platform for the Queensland Government to launch its Apprenticeships Deliver campaign, reinforcing the state’s commitment to strengthening and promoting apprenticeship pathways.
The Australian Apprenticeships Stakeholder Luncheon reflects MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees’ ongoing commitment to advocacy, collaboration and excellence in apprentice employment and training.
As one of the flagship events of National Apprenticeship Week, the luncheon provided an opportunity for sector leaders to recognise achievements, share knowledge and support the continued development of Australia’s skilled trade workers.
